Kwality Music Friday: Good Friday is all about Davido.

When megastars announce their album release dates, other artists tend to veer clear of that date in a bid to avoid their release getting drowned out. Davido is as big as it gets. When you consider the magnitude of his superstardom combined with the intense buildup to his highly anticipated fifth album, 5ive, it’s not surprising that New Music Friday doesn’t offer much outside of the DMW head honcho.

Davido has shown the Nigerian music industry how to roll out an album. The rollout for 5ive has been nothing but exceptional. He has made a mockery of his peers, who have often relied on throwing temper tantrums on the internet in a bid to get people fired up for their imminent release. However, as good as the rollout has been, the most important thing is the music Davido has to offer. Social media has been awash with varying opinions of the album, as you would expect, with fans and critics making known their thoughts on the album. Kwality Kontent will be here to provide an in-depth review of the album in the coming days.

Speaking of reviews, Kwality Kontent will not be providing an in-depth review of Dammy Krane’s brand new EP, 5ive. What Kwality Kontent will be providing, however, is a job for Mr Krane; he desperately needs one as soon as possible, and we’ll be kind enough to offer him one. Don’t get me wrong; we are here for people fooling and trolling, only when it’s good and funny. His new EP sounds like one of those AY jokes that’s incapable of making anyone laugh. If you’re going to release an EP titled 5ive to troll Davido because you guys have beef, at least let it be good. Give Davido haters material to work with, not a disgusting compilation of horrible songs capable of making human ears bleed. Send your CV to us, Mr Krane.

R&B sensation Layefa released a sensational record titled 6:35. Her sultry vocals cut through the minimalist instrumental like a hot knife through butter, allowing her intoxicating melodies to take centre stage. It’s easily one of the best releases on this week’s New Music Friday.

Nigerian and Fulham FC superstar Alex Iwobi makes his music debut with a brand new single, Hop Out, featuring Odumodublvck and Ramz. The Afroswing/Hip-hop single is exactly what you’d expect from a wealthy and successful footballer who thinks he has talent. Iwobi does his best Jhus impression, and Odumodublvck lays a suitable verse and keeps it moving. Which is exactly what you should do after listening to the song – keep it moving. Speaking of keeping it moving, Rybeena and Rexxie disappoint with their new single, Egbami. The song struggles to get moving and basically offers nothing during its two minute, three second run time.

Tim Lyre enlists Show Dem Camp on his brand new single Economy. The song is a smooth record with a trio delivering an enjoyable documentation of the jungle that Nigeria is and the mess that Nigeria’s remote-working president has made since assuming office a little over two years ago. It’s a commendable effort to document the wild times we are living in.

Be sure to check out the latest releases from Hydee Flex, Superwozzy, Masterkraft, Strafitti, Joyce Olong, Dwin, and the Stoic – these records are absolute must-listens.

It’s really all about Davido this Friday. Outside Obo, there’s really not a lot of great new music to enjoy. See you at the review.
