Detty December With Sense: A Short Survival Guide

Before You Go Outside: Read This December Safety Checklist

Ladies and gentlemen, gather round, it’s that time of year again and Detty December is officially in session. Yes, Detty December is here and the excitement in the air is palpable. After a long year, it’s time to unwind, let loose and party away. The Detty December calendar is filled up, the IJGBs have landed, concerts have been announced, the lineups are stacked and from the look of things, this December promises to be one for the history books.

But before the excitement of the season carries you away, there are some important things you should keep in mind. Especially if you want nothing to kill your vibe and to ensure this December doesn’t turn into a story you don’t want to remember.

1. Share Your Location With Someone (Anybody You Trust)

Outside is fun until something happens and no one knows where you are. It’s important to always ensure someone you trust knows about your plans, your destination and the people you are moving with. Just in case your phone runs out of power or anything unexpected happens. Share your live location with family members and friends especially if you’re going to a new venue or linking up strangers. Always ensure someone knows where you’re going to and who you are going there with. It’s very important.

2. Move in Packs

Detty December is not the time to be the lone wolf. In fact, it’s even more fun when you move with people you trust. That way, you can keep an eye on one another and deal with chaotic situations in a more proper and safer manner. Arrive with people. Leave with people.

3. Keep Your Valuables Where Pickpockets Can’t Reach

It’s December, the pickpockets are out and ready for action. To ensure you don’t fall victim, ensure your valuables are out of their reach. If possible, keep your valuables at home and take only what you really need (cash, phone and ID).

4. Hydrate Like Your Life Depends on It (Because It Does)

Always ensure a bottle of water is in your possession at all times. As you’re taking shots, mixing drinks, or just casually sipping, make sure water is entering your system with the same enthusiasm. Detty December comes with heat, packed venues, loud music, and nonstop movement. Keeping your body hydrated would feel better and actually enjoy the night. Always make sure you have a bottle of water on you.

5. Sort Your Ride Early

Trying to get an Uber or Bolt in December is a truly humbling experience. The demand for rides is at its peak and the riders are literally in God mode once December kicks in. To ensure you’re not at the mercy of these guys, plan how you’re getting home before you even step out. Know how you’re getting there and, more importantly, how you’re getting back. You don’t want to be stranded outside at 2 a.m. refreshing your app in frustration. Also, if you’re driving, don’t drink. And if you know you’ll be drinking, don’t even think of driving.

6. Carry Cash

As much as we all love the ease of transfers, the network in Nigeria has a way of disgracing anybody. And if you plan to be outside, you’re definitely going to run into situations that remind you cash is king. Carry a reasonable amount of cash enough to sort small emergencies, buy water and handle quick payment. It’s also important that you don’t carry more money than you need; losing your hard earned money is the quickest way to ruin your entire night and possibly the entire month.

7. You don’t have to go to every concert

I’m not even going to lie, the December lineup looks very tempting. There’s something happening every day and if you plan to be outside every single day of the month, I’m not going to hold you. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to show up for everything. It’s okay to skip a few events, stay indoors, rest, and let your body reset. Pick the shows that genuinely excite you, pace yourself, and don’t let FOMO force you to drag yourself everywhere just so you can say you were outside. You have to oblee with your body in mind.

8. January Is Just Around the Corner

Enjoying Detty December is important but don’t forget January is right around the corner waiting to slap you back to factory settings with bills and responsibilities. Enjoy yourself, but don’t burn out completely, you’ll need your body, wallet, and sanity intact for the new year. There’s no point starting the new year with lost phones and drained bank accounts. Have fun, catch vibes, make memories but keep one eye on the calendar.
