For the second week in a row, the Afropop scene has seen a noticeable absence of heavyweight releases, with major artists appearing to take a break from releasing new songs. This trend shares similarities with recent weekends, allowing new talents and established mid-tier musicians to attract listeners’ attention in a saturated landscape.
As the title suggests, artists like Fola, T.I Blaze, Kaestyle, and TML Vibez have taken advantage of this occasion to display their quality talents, demonstrating the incredible quality of music on display across all tiers of the Afrobeats hierarchy. Despite the absence of industry titans releasing new material, this week’s New Music Friday still presents a mix of songs spanning numerous sounds and moods across the Nigerian music landscape.
Ejoya’s “Flow State” EP is one of the week’s highlights, as Ejoya once again showcases their ability to curate a cohesive sonic experience. The project is the Hip-Hop chapter of the “Class of ‘24” project and features some of Nigeria’s most exciting rap talents. It’s a must-listen for every lover of good music. It’s an intricately crafted and beautifully executed project. A sign of good things to come from the Ejoya Class of 24.
Zlatan teams up with Fola on “Get Better”, a motivational anthem that showcases both artists’ abilities to create easily digestible music that connects deeply with the soul. Fola replicates the magic he first displayed on the gorgeous Who Does That alongside Bella Shmurda. He doesn’t just compliment Zlatan Ibile on the record; he is the star of the show and delivers a potent hook that captures the listeners attention, with Zlatan delivering two verses that aim to inspire and motivate. It’s easily one of the best songs released this week.
Lady Donli’s “Keep on Loving Me” thrives on its warm instrumentation, sweet harmonies, heartfelt and playful lyrics. The production laced with lush kicks, infectious strings and airy synths borrows elements of Afrobeats, Afropop, hip-hop and electronic music. Despite its far-reaching fusion, Lady Donli creates an intimate atmosphere that fans of her previous work will immediately connect with, while potentially drawing in new listeners attracted to her unique sonic palette.
We’ll keep this short and simple. Khaid’s For You is an annoying song. It’s a weak attempt at a viral hit, and it sounds like a bunch of songs in his discography. Khaid’s incredible success on TikTok has stalled his artistic development. He hasn’t evolved much since his debut, and it’s affecting the music. Everything he has done in the past year has been weak, and nothing has stuck. It’s time for his music to mature; enough of this ice cream truck music. It’s not inspiring any dance challenge; it’s putting people to sleep.
Ladipoe’s technical skill and wordplay remain as sharp as ever on I No Be God. However, the song leaves something to be desired as a complete package. Despite his clever rapping to his love interest as he tells her everything he intends to do for her but acknowledges his limitations both financially and emotionally. The song doesn’t do much outside Poe’s crafty lyricism, but it’s a decent listen.
Kaestyle and Tml Vibez join forces on “Shalaye”, delivering a track that combines catchy hooks with street-smart lyrics. Their chemistry is evident throughout, making for an enjoyable listen that balances commercial appeal with authentic expression. T.I BLAZE makes a statement with “Introduction”, a track that belies its title as it shows considerable artistic maturity. His unique vocal texture and honest storytelling continue to set him apart in an increasingly crowded Afrobeats landscape.
Iyanya continues to remind listeners of his enduring presence in the industry with “Yebo”, a track that balances nostalgic elements of his earlier work with contemporary production. While it doesn’t break new ground, it effectively plays to his strengths and should satisfy his core fanbase. Veteran artist KCee returns with “Abeg. ” The song thrives on its infectious rhythm and easy chorus and has the potential to grow into a sleeper hit if it gains some traction in the coming weeks.
Be sure to check out the latest releases from Dremo, Jubed, Shoday, Kofi Jamar, Twitch 4Eva, Tiphe and Orezi – these records are absolute must-listens.
This week’s releases reflect the evolution of Nigeria’s music scene, with established artists refining their sound alongside newcomers pushing boundaries. As March continues to deliver quality music, listeners have plenty of music to explore in the coming week.
